I finally have some time to sit and reflect about an appalling news situation I read about the other day out of California (which I posted on my FB). Before I get going if you haven’t been able to read the article or haven’t heard about the story read it here at TVSPY.com (or click on the picture next to this blog and it’ll link you to the KCAL.com web story). Now my question posed to the general audience when does ethics play a role in what we broadcast on TV? Do you really want to see everything?
My opinion…I know being in the news world it is our responsibility to tell the stories about our community (breaking news, heart warming stories, corruption, deaths, etc.). But when do we go too far? I believe KCAL’s coverage went a little too far…I don’t argue the fact that breaking news happens and we can’t control what happens. But as news journalists WE can control what happens afterwards. According to the article written by TVSPY.com it explains that KCAL-TV “…showed the suspect’s body being removed from the car. Video of the shooting was shown several times on the station’s evening newscasts, sometimes in slow-motion..” Now again the montra in news is if it bleeds it leads…apparently that’s what viewers want to see. However, I don’t think it was meant so literally…I don’t think the american people want to see blood and guts on their local newscast. And I would assume they most definitely don’t want to exlpain to their 8,9,10 year old children why the cops just opening fire on a guy multiple times…what happened to him…and why are they pulling a body out of the car? (Kids are curious…they will ask)
We as people of the broadcast world should have SOME ethics to not show those things (again breaking news is a different story…I know…I get it…we can’t control what happens and we’re doing our job by showing people exactly what’s happening). BUT to show the shooting footage over and over is a bit much…but to put a cherry on top of their coverage was the fact that they showed the LAPD pulling the dead body out of the car (AND SLOW-MO-ed it)…COME ON!!!!!!!!!
I’ve been in breaking news situation and I know for the most part you are scrambling for footage so your anchor has something to talk about…but come on stop and think is it right to show this footage…do I really need to show this again and again and again? Sure the suspect may have been guilty…and sure the suspect wasn’t the smartest person to run from the cops…but he’s still a human and he still has a family that has to deal with the horrible situation. Have a little respect for them (at the very least).
Comments on the KCAL.com website poured in moments after this incident occurred. Viewers lashed out at LAPD, the suspect and even KCAL for their coverage of this event. Here are just some of the comments:
- “This is for KCAL9………..16 years ago a man blew his head off after a chase ended on a bridge. It was very sad. You stated you would NEVER have your copters show this type of thing again. It was very traumatic for my 9 year old grandson. he had no idea what was happening. I guess your ratings are down…” -Rooney
- “I am sickened that the killing of that suspect was aired on live TV… I am flummoxed by the fact that the newscasters keep saying that police pulled that innocent bystander to safety. They did not. I wonder if there are any journalists at KCAL 9 who are up to the task of reporting this story in a non-sensational way…” -Kathleen
- “However for KCAL9 to keep saying on TV that the Police SHIELDED the innocent man and got him to safety is only to boost their ratings, we watched it, that is NOT what happened. That type of false reporting is why people do not like the journalists and/or News stations.” -Debi
Again, in news it’s our job to bring YOU, the viewers, the stories from what’s happening around you. But I think as news professionals we should be able to do it in a tasteful, respectful and morally ethic way!
Your thoughts? Fire away!
First let’s start off with a beautiful Seattle sunrise shot on this Saturday! It’s a little chilly but dry nonetheless so I will take it!

Two quick stories I want to share with you today. One is from KING 5 News this morning. Over the weekend a couple had their dog stolen from their backyard. Luckily, they have security video of the dog nappers. What really hit with me wasn’t the fact that a dog was stolen (that is sad in itself). But in the story the couple explains how you can hear the dog whimper as it’s being drug out of the backyard because the dog is being shocked by it’s electrical shock collar.
Who in their right mind would steal someone’s pet…I mean come on. To take someone’s let/friend/companion is just uncalled for. If you want to watch the story click here and it’ll take you to KING5.com.

On a lighter note we’re not all perfect in the TV world. As Gene Moos explains
Have a great day
Okay let me start by saying I am a Packer fan to the end…but here was the controversial call from that game. What do you think?
“As Green Bay’s coverage team converged on Hester as he looked skyward, Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox was actually catching the ball on the far sideline. All alone, Knox sprinted up the fringe of Soldier Field. By the time that the Pack realized that the ball hadn’t been kicked to Hester, Knox was long gone. He would score on the play, seemingly putting the Bears in position to attempt an onside kick to prolong their comeback bid.
But an official had thrown a flag during the return and it was called back. It was announced that the penalty was holding, which isn’t a strange call on most long kick returns. The only problem here was that this nothing like most long kick returns. Knox had been all alone from the start with no defenders even running in his direction until it was far too late. To make matters worse for the officials, the replays revealed no clear infractions on any Bears players, including No. 21 who seemed to have been named by the refs as the offending player. In the FOX broadcast booth, neither Joe Buck or Troy Aikman could figure out why the hold was called, especially on No. 21.”
First off, nice call by Da Bears! They got everyone looking the other way…and second Packers what the heck were you thinking? Come on containment please…containment! But nevertheless we are 3-0 and looking good doing it!

Second, in the last blog I gave you my Sunday football picks…I did not so bad this week. I mean who would’ve guessed the Lions and Buffalo would be 3-0? Not me! The Pats looking bad and oh boy, how much do the Colts miss Payton Manning? The Good picks:
- Carolina over Jacksonville
- New Orleans beat the Houston
- Cleveland slides by Miami
- Tennessee over Denver
- San Francisco beats up on Cincinnati (I even noted that it was crazy I was rooting for the 49ers)
- Baltimore destroys St. Louis
- Green Bay goes 3-0 against Chicago
- KAH KAH KAH Hawks beat Arizona (First game at home…good luck for the Hawks)
- Tampa Bay over Atlanta
- Pittsburgh beats the straggling Colts in Sunday Night Football
Now the bad picks:
- Buffalo upsets New England (DAMN!!)
- Giants beat Philadelphia (anyone else have as much dislike for Manning as I do?)
- Detroit over Minnesota (HUH?!?!)
- Oakland over NY Jets (the Raaaaaaay—daaahhhs)
- Chargers over KC
So without the Monday Night game tonight I’m 10-6 (not bad)…we’ll see what happens tonight. Hey I have a better record that the failing Colts!
*Tomorrow I’ll update this blog and give you the final tally*
